Growing Through Studying Abroad Hi, I'm Hikaru, a student in the EU Campus Program. It's been three and a half months since I came to Germany, and now I only have a month and a half left. This is my first time going abroad, so I was nervous and also excited. Now every day is filled with fun, and time is flying by so fast. At first, it took me a long time to get used to life in Germany. Adjusting to the different food culture and living in a shared dorm was challenging. My listening skill was very poor in dating a man who is struggling financially beginning, so I struggled to keep up with classes. I also found it hard to keep conversations going with my buddy, and there were many times when I just wanted to go back to Japan. I only have a short time left, but I want to make lots of memories with my buddy and the other student participants in this program. I'm M, a student participating in the EU Campus Program! First, I would like to share my thoughts after participating in the EU Campus Program. First of all, I felt that this study abroad experience allowed me to go beyond my own limits. Facing language and cultural differences, I felt anxious and lonely at first, but overcoming them gave me confidence and I was able to feel that I had grown. It was also a very valuable experience to come into contact with the culture and values of a different country, Germany. Through interacting with local people, I felt that my horizons had broadened and my values and way of thinking had become more flexible. In particular, I was able to experience the differences in food culture, customs, and social systems, and learned a lot in my life. Secondly, regarding the improvement of my language skills, I didn't feel much because I studied abroad for just 4 months. On the other hands, I think I had definitely acquired practical skills because I heard and spoke English every day during the program while I rarely had such an experience in Japan. Lastly, I would like to mention to one negative aspect of this program. This should be a reason you may not expect to improve your overall English skills. However, all of T-IES courses were conducted in English, so you could definitely improve your listening skills. If you are hoping to improve your English skills, I recommend you to apply for different programs like an exchange program at English speaking countries instead of this program. This time, I will share how the activeness that has been considered as a key to study abroad life in previous reports is expected to be achieved in the classes. In a previous report, it was mentioned that all classes are conducted in English. It is not just the language that is different from classes in Japan. The attitude towards classes is also very different from what is expected in Japan. In Japan, it is considered good to be as quiet as possible during classes and not to disrupt the classes. On the other hand, in Germany, it is important to express your own opinions and asking questions, which is considered participating in the classes.
